The Goeritz group of the splitting is the group of isotopy classes of orientation-preserving self-homeomorphisms of S^3 that preserve each of V and W setwise. The Powell Conjecture states that four specific elements suffice to generate the Goeritz group. Freedman and Scharlemann showed the Powell Conjecture when g = 3. We present an alternative proof of the Powell Conjecture when g = 3, and suggest a strategy for the case of higher genera. |
